Pre-season Friendly - Curzon away
Curzon Ashton 0
Vics 5 (Newby 12 Grand 18 48 Burns pen 30 Danks 68)
Vics shrugged aside Unibond North Curzon with consumate ease and gave their fans some goals to celebrate at the same time.
With both keepers, Coates & Clancy, injured former Farsley Celtic custodian Curtis Aspden took his place between the sticks. And he was called into early action to competently save a swerving 35 yard strike. Riley and Elam went close for Vics before NEWBY scored from a Riley cross with a left foot shot that defeated the keeper’s best efforts before creeping over the goal line. A second was not long in coming and Riley was again the architect with a cleverly flighted free kick that was met by the head of GRAND.
Mike Norton wasted an opportunity to reduce the deficit when, unmarked and with time and space, he hurriedly dragged a shot wide. Riley was yet again at the start of the move that led to a third goal. The promising youngster delivered another perfect far post cross for Elam to have a header blocked and as Connor attempted to gather the rebound he was adjudged to have been tripped inside the box. Aaron BURNS calmly rolled the spot kick into the corner of the net. The referee evened things up by adjudging Ian Herring had tripped an opponent in the box and Norton stepped up only to have his spot kick saved by Aspden.
HALF TIME: CURZON 0 VICS 3
The second half was barely five minutes old before the home defence got itself into a hopeless tangle from an elementary Vics free kick allowing GRAND to nip in and score from a side foot finish. Elam ran at the flustered home defence to set up Burns but his left foot shot smacked against the far post and when the ball was returned the same player had a half volley parried by the keeper. Meadowcroft replaced Bailey and Danks came on for Elam. And within 5 minutes DANKS added a fifth goal with a shot from the edge of the box. Cruising comfortably Vics took the opportunity to give the rest of the substitutes an outing.
There will undoubtedly be far tougher opposition to contend with in the months ahead but fans could not have asked for much more than the clinical destruction of their hosts.
